All new patients will first receive an initial assessment where a BioPsychoSocial (i.e. Medical, Mental, and Social) health history will be taken and treatment recommendations provided based on the assessment. Initial assessments usually take 1-2 sessions to complete.
Assessments for Gender Confirmation Surgeries, Puberty Suppression, and/or Hormone Therapy
These assessments are designed to assess an individual’s readiness and document medical necessity of treatment. These assessments are completed in accordance with the WPATH Standards of Care and are useful in helping substantiate the medical necessity of such procedures for insurance companies and other possible benefits (e.g. Flex/Health Savings Accounts) when individuals meet criteria established by WPATH. WPATH does NOT require a set number of Individual Sessions for these assessments but acknowledged that a sufficient number–based on clinical needs–of sessions is needed to gather the necessary clinical information and address any barriers to care. The goal of these sessions is not to be a barrier to accessing care, but to be a bridge to quality care and to help an individual address any clinical barriers and plan for a healthy treatment, surgery, or recovery process. For individuals with limited barriers or clinical contraindications, these assessments can usually be completed within a few sessions. A collaborative framework is used throughout the assessment and documentation process.
Individual Therapy sessions are the most common service provided. These sessions often focus on common mental health challenges including treating depression, anxiety, and self-esteem/self-image. Specialized and affirming individual therapy is available for LGBTQ and transgender individuals. For transgender individuals, these sessions are often used to explore aspects of gender identity and expression, processing emotions in relation to transition, exploring ways of integrating one gender identity and expression, processing distress around an individuals sense of gender incongruence and/or possible body dysmorphia, and addressing readiness factors for individuals in need of medically necessary gender confirmation procedures (i.e. surgery and recovery needs, puberty suppression, hormone therapy).
Group Therapy sessions are currently in the planning stages, and they will likely be offered in the near future.
Family and Couples Sessions
Currently, family and couples sessions are limited to sessions aimed at helping individuals improve interpersonal dynamics and enhance understanding and affirmation within their family and intimate relationships, particularly in relation to an individual’s LGBTQ identity and/or gender transition. Referrals to therapists with more specialized practices in ongoing couples and family therapy will be provided for those needing ongoing therapy to address substantive challenges with family and intimate relationships.
Consultation and Training Services
Consultation and training services are available for professionals and workplaces, particularly in relation to providing Transgender and LGBTQ affirming workplaces and/or clinical care. Such training and consultation services have been provided are national conferences, to small and large employers across the US, at universities and professional schools, and to individual professionals seeking to enhance their clinical skills.
Referrals will be made on a case-by-case basis based on the clinical needs of each individual.
